CANINE GOOD CITIZEN

AKC Canine Good Citizen Class

This class is to prepare dogs and handlers to take and successfully pass the AKC Canine Good Citizen certification.  For all dogs and owners who want to be responsible members of society and who would like to have a good foundation for the many other skills and joys to be found in other dog related activities. This is a required class for all our Service Dog teams.

Responsible Owners, Well-Mannered Dogs. The AKC's Canine Good Citizen program is recognized as the gold standard for dog behavior. In CGC, dogs who pass the 10 step CGC test can earn a certificate and/or the official AKC CGC title. Dogs with the CGC title have the suffix, "CGC" after their names.

Requirements

To be successful your dog should be able to do basic skills: heeling on leash, sit, down, and the desire to improve these skills. All tests must be performed on leash. Dogs should wear well-fitting buckle or slip collars (including martingales) made of leather, fabric, or chain. They
may also wear body harnesses for the CGC test. Body harnesses should not restrict the movement of the dog. Special training equipment such as pinch collars and head collars are not permitted. The leash should be made of either leather or fabric. Retractable leashes may not be used in the CGC test.

All dogs, including both purebred and mixed breed dogs are welcome to participate in the AKC's Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Program. Dogs must be old enough to have received necessary immunizations such as rabies vaccines. Owners will sign the Responsible Dog Owners Pledge attesting to having the dog under the routine care of a veterinarian who will work with the owner to determine an appropriate plan and schedule for vaccines and other health care procedures.

There is no age limit for the CGC test. A dog is never too old to be a good citizen. Puppies who have completed all immunizations and boosters may be tested, however, because we know that behavior and temperament can change over time, when puppies pass the CGC test, owners should have them re-tested as adults.

Test requirements can be found at http://www.akc.org/cgc-pledge/
