Rehabilitation therapy is common in human medicine. In recent years it has become available for pets. The purpose of rehabilitation therapy is to help pets recover for injuries, illness, surgery, trauma and also to help with geriatric issues of pets such as arthritis and loss of muscle tone and strength. The goal of rehabilitation for pets is to return the pet to normal function when possible. Rehabilitation therapy for pets is often proactive and involves activities that owners can be taught to do at home with their pets in addition to activities performed at PawsAbilities with the doctor and owner working together.
It is best to begin rehabilitation shortly after injury or surgery rather than waiting weeks to months. After an initial examination and evaluation each pet has an individualized rehabilitation treatment plan designed by the doctor that is trained and experienced in rehabilitation. Strengthening of specific muscle groups, endurance, proprioceptive retraining, flexibility and coordination training are involved in rehabilitation treatment. The exercise program for each individual is tailored to each pet’s goals which are based on the weaknesses of that pet’s condition.
Rehabilitation involves a variety of treatments including physical exercise, stretching, massage, ultrasound, water work including treadmill work, electrical stimulation to muscle groups, heat therapy, cryotherapy and acupuncture.
