Retrieve (Fetch)

The Retrieve or Fetch was probably one of the first skills humans taught to dogs. Some people speculate that the retrieve was first taught because humans were tired of having to compete with their canine hunting companions for the best part of the quarry !

In Modern times, The Sporting Breeds have been the primary examples of useful retrievers, since these breeds still are used to hunt and retrieve game birds. The Retrieve, however, is not just a skill used in hunting. It has become a foundation skill that virtually every dog can learn and it provides you with many practical uses:

The concept is that your dog willingly goes immediately to the object you designate, picks it up, brings it back, sits in front, and holds the object until you take it from him or her.
While the dog illustrated is retrieving a "dumbbell", your dog can learn to pick up anything from dirty laundry to a writing pen. A must learn skill for every dog!
